Intel talks up next-gen Itanium: 32nm, 8-core Poulson

It's been a long time since Intel tried to introduce a new Itanium chip. Now Chipzilla is upping the ante -- moving to 32nm process, adding up to four more cores, and tacking on more than one billion additional transistors. Poulson also adds a new feature called Intel Instruction Replay Technology, which adds a buffer for more quickly recovering from errors, allowing the chip to pick up from the last known good instruction instead of having to completely flush the pipeline. Those looking to upgrade will also be happy to hear that the upcoming IA-64 CPU is pin compatible with Tukwila, so customers can simply drop the new processor in to existing systems.

Apple Lawsuit Delays Samsung Galaxy Tab Launch in Australia

Samsung has agreed to hold off bringing the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Australia until it resolves its patent lawsuit with Apple, Inc.

Apple and Samsung are battling in court in several jurisdictions, including the U.S., South Korea and now, Australia, over claims that certain Samsung devices — like the Galaxy Tab 10.1 — violate a number of Apple patents. Samsung has countersued Apple over some of these claims.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Apple filed an additional injunction in Australia, claiming that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 violates 10 Apple patents.

Businessweek goes on to say that Samsung has agreed to stop advertising the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and says it will not sell the device until it gets approval from the court. Samsung had been advertising the device since July 20, which was the reason Apple requested an injunction.

Although Apple’s claims in Australia are based on the U.S. version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung says that the Australian version will be different. Samsung will provide Apple with samples of the Australian version at least seven days before distributing the tablet to market, according to Businessweek.

The center of Apple’s arguments against Samsung — as well as HTC — is around the “look and feel” of competitor devices. Apple claims that the industrial design and behavior of the various Android OS skins that Samsung and HTC use in their products are too similar to Apple’s iOS line of devices.

Angry Birds Maker Sued for Patent Violation

Rovio, maker of the very popular hit multi-platform game Angry Birds, is being sued by U.S. firm Lodsys for patent violations, the Telegraph reports.

Lodsys claims that the Finnish companyRovio violated its patents, which cover the methods for purchasing new levels inside the Angry Birds game.

The European patent system requires that software inventions exhibit some physical effect from patentability, while the U.S. patent system is more lenientax, allowing for purely idea-based software patents.

According to the Telegraph, several European game developers have given up on launching their games in the U.S., and some are considering withdrawing games from the U.S. market due to patent claims by Lodsys.

Angry Birds is downloaded more than 1 million times per day. Originally a mobile game, it quickly spread onto many platforms, including browsers and consoles, and its success has prompted Rovio to even consider an IPO.
